Teams Set for Final Battle Tomorrow
The famed Campos Square Mini Stadium inLagos will host the final of the
second edition of Etisalat U-15 School Cup omorrow. This is will be
the climax of football actions which kicked off last year on a national
scale with schools competing at the sta
te and regional
levels.Commenting on the competition, Head, Events and
Sponsorship, Etisalat Nigeria, Modupe Thani said the telecommunications
company established the school cup to discover budding football talents
in the country and help them pursue their dreams.She said, “At
Etisalat, we support activities aimed at developing the youths.
The Etisalat U-15 School Cup is not an exception and the journey so far
has been exciting. We are giving the youths participating in
this tournament a chance to compete among their peers , improve their
game and write their future. We commend the coaches for their
commitment to the participating teams and we are eager to witness
the finals where the champions will emerge.
The national finals of the competition kicked off last Monday with the quarterfinal matches between eight teams drawn from the regional competition and grouped into groups A and B.Rimi College, Kaduna; Winners College, Akure, Ondo; Greensprings SecondarySchool, Lagos and Government Secondary School, Imo made up the group A teams while group B consisted of Army Day Secondary School, Sokoto;Washington Memorial Grammar School, Anambra, Asegun High School, Oyoand Government Model School Bida, Niger.Winners College, Akure, Ondo and Rima College, Kaduna flagged off theQuarter final rounds and at the end of the tension soaked match, the Ondo boys defeated their counterparts from Kaduna 3-1. The second quarter final first round match saw Army Day Secondary School, Sokoto leading WashingtonMemorial Grammar School by a lone goal scored in the dying minutes of thefirst half before hitting the net again in the second half to gun down theiropponent 2-1.
Covenant Model School Bida, Niger rounded off the pulsating match day with a 2-1 victory over hard-fighting Asegun High School, Oyo.Covenant Model School, Bida, Niger followed up their first round Quarter finalvictory success with a hard fought 2-0 over Army Day Secondary School,Sokoto, while Rima College, Kaduna compounded their woes with a 2-0 lossagainst Government Secondary School, Imo.The next match was a 0-0 draw between Washington Grammar School,Anambra and Asegun High School, Oyo while Winners College , Ondomaintained its winning streak against Greensprings Secondary School, Lagoswith a solitary strike, piping their Lagos counterpart with a 1-0 victory.
The winning school will be rewarded with a cash prize of N2 million while itsplayers will be given N50,000 each. The first runner up will go home with N1million and N30,000 for each player while N750,000 will be given to the thirdplaced school and its players will each receive N20,000.
